Validating Information on the Web--Get REAL

R--read the URL

Do you recognize the domain name?

What is the extension of the domain name?

Are you on a personal page? (look for a name, a tilde, a percent sign, or words like member, users, etc)Truncate the address and to see what the homepage looks like

E-Examine the Content

Don't judge a book by its cover

Be a critical reader

A-Ask about the author and owner

Check the "contact us" or "about us" button, look up the author in google

Use easywhois to see who owns the site

http://www.easywhois.com

Check out the past versions of the site

http://www.archive.org (try Harrypotter.com)

L-Look at the links

Check the URL's of the forward links (hover your cursor over the linked text)--you should find a wide variety of academic sources. Be leary if all the links take you other spots in the same home page.

Check the back links (see who links to this site--it's easy with Soople). Who is linked to the site? Why? What do other sites say about the material on the site?
